An Epidemiological Study on Japanese B Type Encephalitis Patients Reported in Namwon-Gun, Cholla-pukdo in 1966


Abstract
The study was aimed at finding out the status of epidemic and the sequelae of Japanese B type encephalitis which is a well-known serious infectious disease in Korea since 1949. A total of 102 cases were reported as encephalitis and 23 out of 102 cases were died during the 1966 epidemic in Namwon-gun, Cholla-pukdo.
This study was carried out to find out the epidemic status on the 102 cases reported as encephalitis from 7 August to 30 September 1966 and also to find out the prognosis and sequelae of the encephalitis on 38 out of 79 survivors from the 1966 encephalitis outbreak from 3 September to 8 September 1968 and following results were obtained;
1. The incidence rate of Japanese B type encephalitis (including suspected encephalitis cases) was 54. 4 per 100, 000 population for all ages and that of under 15 years of age group was 11. 8 for total, 149. 4 for male, and 85. 3 for female.
2. The case fatality rate of Japanese B type encephalitis during the epidemic was 28.4 per cent for total, 25.4 per cent for male and 34.3 per cent for female.
3. A main epidemic period of the outberak was one month from the middle August to the middle September in the year.
4. The sequelae of encephalitis were found in all ages: 52.7 per cent of 38 survivors from the 1966 epidemic had one or more kinds of signs and/or symptoms as the sequelae of encephalitis.
